Snack Smart & Study Hard

Us college students spend an enormous amount of our time studying. It is pretty much a guarantee that we are going to snack while we study, which is completely okay…if you do it right. When studying, it is easy to grab some candy or a cookie to keep you from starving. But…that’s not actually helping you. Sugary snacks will help for a solid 30 minutes but then you will go through a sugar crash. What you need is healthy, power snacks to keep your brain going.

Below I have provided a list of some snacks that are easy to take on the go and will keep you going on those late night study grinds:

1.       Almonds

2.       Apples

      3.       Dark Chocolate

4.       Popcorn

5.       String Cheese
6.       Greek Yogurt
Always remember that portion control is important as well. Yes, these snacks are all great for small brain breaks but don’t overdo it and eat a whole bag of almonds in one sitting.
Once you've got the snacks, all you need to do is study. Studying is so important in college. Most college students spend a lot of their time completing homework and studying for exams. Although everyone studies differently there are some simple guidelines everyone should follow.

Below is a small list of tips for good study habits:

1.      Don’t start studying the night before an exam
2.      Don’t sit in your bed while studying

3.   Avoid any distractions

4.   Make sure there is good lighting.
5.   Bring Everything you Need ( Try to remember all supplies before you start to study so you don't have to get up and go get extra supplies. )

6.   Take Breaks ( Eat those Snacks! )

Eat these snacks and follow these study tips and you’ll be passing tests and acing homework in no time. J

10 Tips to Staying Healthy in College

Oh no! Not the dreaded Freshman 15! Many college students have trouble staying healthy. Whether that be because unlimited food in the dining halls or eating as a stress reliever. Lots of students leave their high school ports in the past come to college forgetting that they need to work out. Below I have posted 10 easy changes to keep you healthy throughout college.

1.       Eat Breakfast

-          And no I am not talking about eating breakfast and Noon. Get up and start your day early. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It starts your morning off right and gets your metabolism going.

2.       Get Plenty of Sleep

-          It is tough to get 8 hours of sleep a night. With all the homework and activities college students are involved in, you are lucky to get 6 hours. Make a routine for your sleep schedule, if you can’t get in 8 hours of sleep shoot for at least 6 or 7.

3.       Wash your Hands

-          Illnesses can spread very easily in the dorms. Washing your hands is an easy way to keep clean and stop the sicknesses from spreading to you.

4.       Drink Water

-          Staying hydrated is so important. Sugary drinks don’t do much for you, including ruining your teeth and gaining weight. Stick to water and try to shoot for 8 cups a day.

5.       Exercise

-          Lots of college students forget how important it is to work out. Not saying you need to be able to run 5 miles every day but at least get moving for 30 minutes 5 times a week.

6.       Don’t Skip Meals

-          As a college student being constantly busy it is easy to skip meals. Try to avoid that as much as possible. Have snacks prepared so you can grab them when you’re on the run.

7.       Take Vitamins

-          Eating a diet with all the necessary nutrition is hard. Take vitamins to help you get all the needed nutrients needed for a healthy individual.

8.       Give Yourself a Break

-          Stress can take over a student’s life in college. Studying for final exams can be miserable when you’ve been at it for 6 hours. Take a break, eat a snack, and get up and walk around. You will return to your studies more refreshed than before.

9.       Make Time for Yourself

-          In college it’s easy to get lost in school and your social activities. It is important to set aside time for yourself to do things that you enjoy.

10.   Don’t Smoke

-          Smoking will ruin your health. It is one of the leading causes to cancer. Stay away from it at all costs, and don’t let peer pressure get to you when you are offered to give it a try.

Forget the Fast Food and Get Cooking!

“I’ll take a Big Mac, large French fry, a large coke and a regular chocolate sundae.” It is just one meal…It can’t be that bad can it? Wrong. That one meal consists of 1,696 calories, 63 grams of fat and 253 carbs. (According to My Fitness Pal) Most people know that fast food isn’t good for us, but there aren’t many healthy options when you’re on a budget and short on time.

What does fast food do to us?

Not only does fast food affect peoples’ weight drastically, but it also affects our organs inside the body. With the fat building up from these fatty foods it becomes hard for our organs to work properly.  Fast food can cause many diseases like heart disease and diabetes. When ones weight goes up so does the risk for these diseases.

The following video shows the way these fatty foods affect our body:

Sugar High

Fast food consists of usually a lot of sugar. Sugar is good at some amounts, but consuming too much is not good. When eating junk food sugar is often the only source of energy in the food. Our bodies use the sugar so quickly that we get a sugar high and then crash within a short amount of time.

What else is there to eat?

Now the remaining question…What should you eat instead of fast food? You want to give your body the energy it needs to keep you going throughout the day. Sausage McMuffins are not going to do the trick. Instead of running through the drive through on your way to work grab a piece of fruit on your way out the door. Also yogurt, eggs, or a fruit smoothie are good options as well. For lunch and dinner don’t make that quick stop at the local Burger King, instead have a salad, steamed vegetables or grilled chicken. Making food at home can be fast and cheap if you do it the right way.

Well, now it is your turn! I’ve told you what you need to know and now it’s time to go out and change your eating habits. Don’t let fast food change your body. Forget the fast food and get cooking!
